What causes an O-ring to swell or become brittle?
O-ring swelling is commonly caused by chemical incompatibility, where the seal material absorbs process fluid and expands. Brittleness is more often associated with excessive heat, aging, oxidation, ozone exposure, or use of an elastomer that is not suited to the operating environment. In either case, the correct replacement should be selected based on the fluid, temperature, pressure, and service conditions rather than size alone.
